Reports are saying that carriers and Nokia’s board are becoming restless with WP7, and they are pushing for alternatives to WP7, to slow down the fast decline of the company, and the consumer rejection of WP7 smartphones. It seems that WP7 might have been another critical mistake for Nokia and this time it might be an endgame scenario.I still believe that Nokia made a huge mistake by not adopting Android as their main operating system. I don’t think it was just a decision that Nokia’s board or Elop made, but one that was influenced by the whole culture of the company. Many…

Two of HTC’s heavy hitters — the HTC EVO 4G LTE and HTC One X — are facing shipping delays here in the states due to a U.S. Customs investigation. Apparently, both devices are being examined to ensure they aren’t in violation of an International Trade Commission exclusion order over Apple patent #5,946,647 (having to do with clickable links inside messaging and browser apps). HTC was supposed to have taken care of the issue but in a statement today, HTC announced: "The US availability of the HTC One X and HTC EVO 4G LTE has been delayed due to a standard U.S. Customs…

T-Mobile plans to cut a number of jobs as part of a restructuring plan, according to a leaked company email written by CEO Philipp Humm.  Without saying how many will be affected or where the jobs will come from, Humm advises that some "difficult decisions" will be made in the coming days.  We might be reading our own things into the email (below) but it sounds like some middle management spots will be scrapped or consolidated. At least it's not a bottom-up shedding of sales reps from retail stores.  We'll find out the rest of the details as things come to light in the next couple of days.

Traditionally in the Android development cycle, major versions have launched at the end of the year (exception being Gingerbread/Honeycomb). According to the Wall Street Journal, Android Jelly Bean should launch this year, “by Thanksgiving”.Will this be Android 5.0 or another version? That depends on Google’s plans for their I/O developer event happening in June. Andy Rubin’s team has two options: one, launch an Android 4.1 version with some improvements at I/O (and call it Jelly Bean), and then give a new name to Android 5.0. Two, use the event to showcase upcoming…

What’s this? Well, it looks like the folks at BriefMobile got their hands on a leaked feature sheet for a new device from HTC dubbed the HTC Ville C. Their source tells them it’s essentially a cheaper version of the HTC One S, which makes sense since the One S was codenamed “Ville“… I guess the “C” stands for “cheaper”. Here are the specs: 4.3-inch qHD AMOLED display 16GB of internal memory 1GB RAM 1.2GHz Qualcomm dual-core MSM8260 S3 processor (the sheet says 1.7GHz but the source says it’s a typo) Ultra slim profile (exact…

Mobile carriers in the U.S. are very concerned about the amount of traffic on their data networks. Too much and the whole thing gets clogged and slows down. A study by video optimization firm Bytemobile has found that it’s not the smartphones carriers need to worry about… it’s the tablets. According to this study, tablets drive three times more mobile data than smartphones. Sure, there are more smartphones being used than tablets right now, but Forrester Research estimates that by 2016, one-third of all adults in the U.S. will own a tablet of some kind. At three times…

  • Google plans to present several Nexus devices from multiple manufacturers by Q4 of 2012

    Tony Rosario
    15 May 2012 | 11:30 pm
Word on the street is that Google is shifting gears when it comes to its Nexus line of Android smartphones. Ever since the release of the HTC Nexus One, Google has always partnered with one single manufacturer in the development of their Nexus handsets. They attempted to sell the Nexus One through their website only, but the carrier subsidies proved too financially significant for many consumers to justify buying a phone at full retail price, at least here in the States. So with the Nexus S and the Galaxy Nexus, the big “G” decided to go with specific carrier releases, while at…

Have you ever heard of the Tizen Operating System? Neither had we until today however what we do know about it is that the HTML 5 based, open source platform is looking to Android’s flourishing Play Store to give it a leg-up. Tizen has clearly taken some inspiration from RIM who famously solved the riddle of how to attract developers to a new platform by sidestepping it completely and simply loading the Android Market to the Blackberry Playbook. Open Mobile is the company behind the trick, a solution it has named ‘Application Compatibility Layer‘ (ACL) which supposedly…

One of the things that Android and Google both cop flack over is the speed at which updates to the Android OS filter out to both new phones and as updates to older devices. One of the reasons specified previously by OEMs has been the fact that they don’t receive access to the source code for the latest update until Google releases their latest Nexus device which also signals the dump of the latest code to AOSP(Android Open Source Project). That would be Monday of next week. T-Mobile said in early December of 2011 that the Amaze 4G would be getting the Android 4.0 update. However, at the time the update was announced we had no firm date on when it would be available. I have a confession to make: I almost never use any of my Android devices for gaming. If I want to play video games, I either find a truck to jump-start my ancient desktop computer or turn on my even more ancient Dreamcast. The fact that I’m terrible at touchscreen controls (and I am) is only part of the problem: there just isn’t enough innovation on the mobile platform for me to choose it over more traditional forms of gaming. • HTC EVO 4G LTE & HTC One X “delayed” in customs because of ITC investigation. That stinks.

    Andrew Kameka
    15 May 2012 | 10:13 pm
Remember how we told you that many Sprint stores would be open at 8 AM later this week for the HTC EVO 4G LTE launch? Well, don’t set your alarm clock just yet because you might end up waiting in line for something you can’t have. HTC’s shipments of the EVO 4G LTE are stuck in customs pending a review of the ITC for possible patent violations. You may recall that Apple previously won an injunction against HTC phones for a way that HTC’s software handles certain functions. HTC quickly stated that it already developed a workaround for this issue and it was expected t…
  • Google may work with 5 OEM partners to create multiple Nexus devices running Jelly Bean

    Natesh Sood
    15 May 2012 | 9:28 pm
The Wall Street Journal reported an interesting story today — one that has serious ramifications for the mobile industry if it pans out.  Essentially, Google is said to be in discussions with five different partner OEMs to manufacture the next Nexus smartphone and tablet, which represents a pure Google device to launch the latest software launch.  Each OEM would create its own Nexus device with different hardware configurations, but the same deep software integration and pure Google experience. The latest and greatest Nexus devices are expected to be available by Thanksgiving 2012 and…
  • Lightbox photo-sharing app shutting down June 15 after team joins Facebook

    Andrew Kameka
    15 May 2012 | 12:54 pm
Facebook has gobbled up another photo-sharing service, only this time it’s not officially making an acquisition. Lightbox, the Instagram alternative that millions of Android users relied on while that other app took more than a year to arrive, is following the competition and joining Facebook. The difference is that Facebook isn’t acquiring the company, just the people who built it. On the Lightbox blog, a message credited to co-founders Thai Tran and Nilesh Patel states that “the Lightbox team is joining Facebook, where we’ll have the opportunity to build amazing products…

Hungry for a new app to tell you where to eat? What about an app that can find a quality restaurant and a tasty price at the same time? Well, then you should satisfy your cravings with Savored, an Android 1.6+ app that does both. Savored is a partner of OpenTable and ZAGAT, and it acts as the happy medium between both services. The first stage of the app is telling Savored where you want to eat, filtered by neighborhood or an entire city; how many people are in a party, up to 18; and the time of your visit. The app then creates a list of venues capable of meeting your party’s needs.

The vocals are then run through audio processing the over-corrects the pitch to give it that distinct sound. The…

    Scott Webster
    15 May 2012 | 1:50 pm
T-Mobile plans to cut a number of jobs as part of a restructuring plan, according to a leaked company email written by CEO Philipp Humm.  Without saying how many will be affected or where the jobs will come from, Humm advises that some "difficult decisions" will be made in the coming days.  We might be reading our own things into the email (below) but it sounds like some middle management spots will be scrapped or consolidated. At least it's not a bottom-up shedding of sales reps from retail stores.  We'll find out the rest of the details as things come to light in the next couple of days.

Some of you T-Mobile users may recall that Samsung seemingly skipped your carrier a few weeks back when they announced which U.S. devices would see an Android 4.0 update.  For reasons unknown, Samsung listed a handful of smartphones and tablets from the other three big players but neglected to mention T-Mobile.  Today sees things getting a bit more clear on that front as the company adds four devices from the Magenta-clad carrier. If you own one of these two smartphones or two tablets then you'll be glad to know that Samsung plans to issue Ice Cream Sandwich to your device. Samsung Galaxy S…

  • Google to take on Apple by giving early Android access to other smartphones

    Danny Brogan
    16 May 2012 | 5:38 am
No more Google Nexus Google’s next version of Android could arrive on as many as five different manufactured smartphones as it changes its approach to launching new operating systems. In the past Google has always tested the water by saddling with one manufacturer to produce the first smartphone on a new Android platform, as part of the Nexus range, before slowly rolling it out on to others. However, the internet giant hopes to take on Apple by working closely with multiple manufacturers so that it’s in a position to release an array of Android smartphones and tablets from launch.

We prefer the phone Samsung’s official Galaxy S III advert has been unveiled, as the mobile world prepares for the phone’s arrival on 30 May. The 60-second commercial - which is sure to appear on every advert break for the foreseeable future -concentrates more on what kind of person will use the phone, rather than the specs themselves. Sean Riley
    15 May 2012 | 9:13 pm
Back in December you might recall that the International Trade Commission ruled that HTC was infringing upon one of Apple’s patents (#5,946,647 if you must know) and a ban was to be placed on the importation of a number of HTC devices. The good news for HTC was that the ban wasn’t immediate and they had until April 19th to rectify the situation or face the ban on a number of their devices. Further good news is that the patent in question was for the UI behavior that pulls up a menu in response to a user selecting a recognizable numeric sequence or string of text like a phone…

My name is Taylor Wimberly and I’m an unhappy Verizon customer. Five months ago I walked into a Verizon store, purchased two Galaxy Nexus phones, and ported my numbers over from T-Mobile. I knew there was a strong chance I might regret that decision, but I wanted to try out Google’s flagship smartphone on America’s largest wireless carrier. Google bent over backwards to get their flagship device on Verizon’s network so we thought they would provide a stellar experience. A few months ago Android was running a promotion where a large number of paid apps were only 10 cents each. Among those that I bought up I purchased Pano. Pano is an amazing, quality, application for taking panoramic pictures. After posting the above picture of the lake near my house on Facebook, a few friends made comments about my “nice wide-angle lens.” The app is self-explanatory. You take a picture and as you move your phone from left to right you will see a transparent remnant of the previous snapshot that you can line up over the top of the left edge of the following image.

I like to remember people’s birthdays. It gives me a good excuse to keep in touch with my friends at least once per year and it helps remind them that I care. Google Contacts has a Birthday field but it doesn’t translate to Android really and there is certainly no real way to be notified or reminded of your contact’s birthdays as part of the stock user interface. I recently found this app called Birthdays. The app automatically reads all the birthdays from your Google Contacts and organizes them is an easy to view list. You can also set multiple reminders for upcoming…

I took for granted that it was common knowledge that Amazon.com gives away a free, paid app everyday. I was talking to a group of Android users at my office who were absolutely delighted to find out about this. After all, different from Apple users, us Android folk are famously cheap. So, if you didn’t already know, you can get a different paid app everyday for free from Amazon. In my experience these are generally games, but I have found some great productivity and business apps there including Tasks N Todos, Documents To Go, and Splashtop. Just navigate to Amazon.com on your phone and…

Since I spend a good about of my time working on internet marketing campaigns it seems that there are far too many mathematical formulas or excel spreadsheets involved in my advertising calculations. Most of the time I am dealing with three variables which are, CPM (or CPC), Impressions, and Cost (or Budget). With two of the three variables I can calculate the third. To assist in these efforts I found a wonderful app called Ads CPM and CPC Calculator. Ad CPM and CPC Calculator is an advertising calculator that lets you compute eCPC, eCPM, conversion rate, CTR, cost per conversion, and…

  • Can T-Mobile survive on its own?

    Joe
    15 May 2012 | 3:59 pm
At this point last year, it appeared as though the second-largest wireless carrier in the U.S. would soon become first by a wide margin. In early 2011 AT&T agreed to acquire T-Mobile USA. By combining the second- and fourth-largest carriers, AT&T would lay claim to the most subscribers in the country. But, more importantly, it would gain control of even largest swaths of spectrum. With a general shortage of spectrum and few ways of acquiring new bands, this acquisition carried heavy implications for the U.S. wireless industry. Less than a year later, the entire thing fell apart.

Not long ago I wrote a post detailing four Android travel apps I found useful. Of course, there are dozens of travel apps on Android, so a few commenters raised objections. In that spirit, I thought we could take just a few minutes to look over a few things they suggested — and a few items people mailed in. OnTheFly One reader suggested that OnTheFly is a better solution than Orbitz. That makes enough sense, since the developer of OnTheFly, ITA Software, is owned by Google. The app does pull from many resources to find the best flight prices within any given parameters. The app…

    Craig
    9 May 2012 | 7:45 am
Think you have a critic's eye for photography? Put it to the test with HTC's challenge. The company is betting you can't tell the difference between a photo taken by its flagship One X smartphone, and one taken by a "professional digital camera". While the idea has merit, the implementation is less than fair. Images are scaled to a small size, making it hard to determine the actual quality. Given that a "professional digital camera" will have a larger sensor and possibly, less image noise, this is hardly a good test to determine the One X's image quality. I personally managed to score 7/10…

  • New TV ad for Galaxy S III demonstrates how well the phone stalks you

    Tyler James
    15 May 2012 | 3:52 am
I wasn’t sure what to think when I first watched the new TV ad for Samsung’s upcoming device. The Galaxy S III appears to be much more than just a phone as it “keeps track of your loved ones,” ”recognizes who you are,” “follows your every move,” and “waits until you’re asleep.” So apparently, the new device stalks you. Creepy? Just a little bit. Probably not the best commercial I’ve seen from Samsung. Would love to hear some thoughts on this. Watch the embedded video yourself, and let us know in the comments.

Well, today Panasonic and NTT Docomo are announcing a new handset – the Eluga V P–06D – that fixes pretty much every complaint we had. Well, without wasting any time, let us commence this little review of the Asus Padphone – the one phone which can be synced with a tablet. GENERAL Starting off, we’ll review some of the more general features of…
  • Sony Tablet P

    13 May 2012 | 10:38 am
Today we’ll be taking a look at the Sony Tablet P. This is a very interesting tablet since it is the only tablet around that has this folding mechanism to it. It may be somewhat annoying to some that it will always have a black 1 inch bar in the middle of the screen, but one can live with that should one truly desire this tablet. This is also known as the Sony Tablet S2. Before starting, I’d like to point out that the Sony Tablet P is a tablet with no support for GSM voice communication, SMS and MMS, but it does have support for regular GSM networks, unlike other tablets that…

Today we’ll be taking a quick, but detailed, glance at the Samsung I9300 Galaxy S III. This device is the apex of mobile technology as far as phones are concerned. This is the ultimate Android device for the time being. It has the best performance, OS, features and so on available. I doubt that something will be able to equal it in the near future. Perhaps in Q4 of 2012 there MIGHT be something out to equal this phone, although knowing Samsung they’ll just start creating different versions of the Samsung I9300 Galaxy S III that are much more powerful than the original. Such was…

Today we’ll be taking a look at the Lenovo ThinkPad. This isn’t a very powerful tablet, but it’s more than strong enough for its time. Despite the fact that it can’t be situated among the most powerful ones, it still is quite decent even for our time. I can’t say I’ve heard too much about the Lenovo tablets since they aren’t that famous world-wide. They don’t even have that many products, I’d say they don’t exceed 5 or 6 different tablets. However, enough with the long intros and let us commence the review of the Lenovo ThinkPad.

  • Samsung Galaxy S III unveiled!

    Jason Yip
    3 May 2012 | 1:44 pm
Lo and behlod, here is Samsung‘s new flagship smartphone after a series of leaks: the Galaxy S III. It was just released in the company’s Mobile Unpacked event in London. This 133g (4.7 ounces) flagship smartphone is 8.6mm at its thickest point, along with Samsung’s new 1.4GHz Exynos 4 Quad processor (like the MX) and 1GB of RAM. Display-wise, there’s a 4.8-inch HD Super AMOLED display (Pentile), with a 1280 x 720 resolution. Coming along with it is a standard 8-megapixel rear camera and 1.9-megapixel in the front. Connectivity-wise, it spots HSPA+, along with a…
  • Supposed Galaxy S III leaks again, with rounded glass

    2 May 2012 | 1:55 am
Another post, another leak! As we come closer and closer to Samsung’s official unveiling date for the Galaxy S III, another picture of what it claims to be the device itself shows up. The above picture, obtained from SamMobile, shows the Galaxy S III with the label GT-I9300 and rounded glass, similar to the Lumia devices. Although we don’t believe this is the actual device itself, it may be a prototype as we’re pretty sure that there wouldn’t be a hardware button. But then again, we won’t know until the day of the event. Keep checking in, and we’ll keep you…

Steve Wozniak, Apple’s co-founder, was happy to share that he loves his Lumia. He went on and on about how intuitive the interface is and how the apps flow perfectly. Furthermore, he states that there’s nothing he’s seen that isn’t more beautiful on the Windows system, but he claims that Android is “no contest” on the interface. He admits he’s not a fan of the Windows voice control function, but the rest is definitely there. However, he admits that his default phone is still the iPhone, and it’s 2 of them. Engadget

Although this phone isn’t as powerful and slim as some other Xperias, but this is a good entry level phone. This thick, 3.2-inch device includes an 800MHz Qualcomm chip with 512MB of RAM, a 3-megapixel camera and a 640 x 480 screen res. Although the specs don’t look too spiffy, this is already running on ICS, in which the other Xperias are still waiting for a taste of it. No word on when we’ll see an official introduction or in-stores, but if you like it, check the source link for a few more photos. Techblog
  • Sony adds more code to Android than any other

    Jason Yip
    27 Apr 2012 | 10:44 am
Anyone know why Sony was able to release ICS to their Tablet S less than five months after it was released? Well, it was probably because of this: according to an engineer at Google, Sony contributes more lines of code to the Android Open Source Project than any other manufacturer, which gives them an advantage with their existing hardware. This should also reassure Sony Ericsson phone users that an upgrade is imminent for their devices. They have already released beta versions of ICS for the Arc and Arc S, along with other phones to ensure stability before releasing to the general public.

Want to see what Android fragmentation looks like, then take a look at the data released by Open Signal Maps. The service, which uses crowd sourcing to create a comprehensive database of cell phone towers, cell phone signal strength readings, and Wi-Fi access points around the world via its Android app, gathered a lot of interesting data from its Android users within the past 6 months. When it comes to fragmentation for Android, it’s both a blessing and a curse. It’s a blessing for us because it allows us to have options, many options. Don’t like small screen, there’s…

Every mobile phone user is in danger of one thing, no matter the operating system, manufacturer or service provider. That is of having unwanted users snooping on their phone. It could happen any time you leave your phone sitting around. You could even have the unfortunate happen and leave it behind someplace (like a Walmart restroom – don’t ask). In any case, I hope other operating systems have apps available that Android does. Of course, Android has security measures built right in that you can make use of that allow you to lock it down. It wasn’t that long ago that we realized that Facebook seemed to take painstaking measures to try to make their mobile web version almost identical in design to their Android app. The layout is now almost perfectly exact and it even works in a very similar way on both. This got me to questioning: which of these works best? (FYI: apparently this question is a popular one right now) What brings us to such a question? Example one: Facebook The reason I came to this question is because in the case of Facebook, the newly designed Android app looked really cool, but it ran very slow, at least…

Get Off My Paper! [by App In The Box] is a fun android action game with a hint of puzzle, making it a crossover of Labyrinth and one of the bug smashing games out there. This great time killer will make you drunk with power over little bugs, tilting your phone like crazy and quoting The Green Goblin’s “I can squash you like a bug” line within the first few minutes. Once again, the title of the game explains the main purpose really well. The metal ball is used to kill those pesky insects that can’t seem to leave your paper alone. If you are a fan of games that involve a lot of phone…

The little kid in you definitely misses those Tom & Jerry days so the whole cat and mouse theme of this android game will soothe him. As you have probably guessed the point of the game is to make sure none of the cheese blocks fall over the edge. Actually, you are allowed to drop or destroy two of them, the third one will trigger a replay of the…

Skype seems to be the go to VOIP tool today for video chat, voice chat, and text instant messaging. In fact, my son is doing a study abroad program to Italy this summer, and we plan on using Skype to keep up with him on a daily basis. We were pleased to see a Skype app for my wife’s iPad 2. How cool is that? By the way, Skype works pretty good on the iPad2.  But the thought came to mind: is Skype safe? Any Internet based application can be snooped at any point on the network on which it travels. So, I started doing some digging to see what Skype has done to ensure security for users.

You must have: -          ICS 4.1.A.0.562 installed on your LT15i (the boot loader doesn’t matter). -          ADB drivers installed – Flashtool-drivers.exe -          Go to Settings > Developer Options  and turn on the USB Debugging -          Go to Settings…

  • Google Changing Android Strategy. Multiple Nexus Devices On The Way

    Eric McBride
    16 May 2012 | 3:56 am
With the aquistition of Motorola Mobility, many OEMs became instantly nervous that Google would begin to play favorites when it came to Nexus devices. In an effort to combat this fear and keep good relationships with all OEMs, Google has repeatedly stated that the Android and Motorola team are staying a safe distance from each other, and that there is no cause for concern. But actions speak louder than words, and Google is apparently prepared to back up its words by taking some pretty big action. According to Wall Street Journal, Google now plans to give multiple OEMs early access to…

I don't know about you guys, but tethering is something I use pretty often. As the proud new owner of a Transformer Prime (previously Galaxy Tab 10.1), I use my phones internet connection often so that I can use my tablet on my way to/back from work. It's actually something I rely on, especially now since my new tablet has no sim card slot. US HTC Sensation 4G owners have been waiting a very long time for the ICS update, and I'm sure many will be happy that this update that hit Europe back in February is finally coming to the US. But there's good and bad news. The good news is that…

While all of these chains offer stunning offers on top-of-the-line phones, they also offer crappy deals on terrible phones no one should buy. Worse off, they sometimes even cost more than flagship models! Let's take a look at some of the worst phones – and phone deals – out there.(This is a preview - click here to read the entire entry.)

    Eric McBride
    15 May 2012 | 8:45 am
I used to be a huge fan of MP3/media players, until I got an Android phone that is. Since then, I much prefer having my music/media player combined with my phone. I just find it more practical. But not everyone feels that way, and many people like to keep their phone and media device seperate. If you happen to be one of those people who aren't using an iPod and wish to have Android powering your favorite media player, you might be interested to know that Sony released their first dual core Android powered Walkman a few weeks ago. Every launch of the great product contains seed of disappointment. After all the excitement what it could be, harsh reality of the real thing hits us hard. Samsung Galaxy S III was not different: why, oh why they had to put awful PenTile display in? How bad is it? What is PenTile? Almost all displays produce colors by mixing three basic ones: red, green, and blue (RGB). Every pixel on the screen is made of three miniature sub-pixels, each in one of the basic colors. If you come very close to the old CRT screens, you can actually see them. PenTile displays are  a bit different. Each pixel…

If you want to sell something to men, just give them continuously improving numbers in specifications. We want more power, less distortion, higher frequencies and longer runtime, even if we don't really need them. They are easy to compare and it's easy to prove that we have something better than the other male. Every now and then, something becomes such overkill that nobody cares about it anymore. Take camera resolution. My first camera had two megapixels. With such resolution, you could only do standard size photos without too much cropping. With every next generation of cameras, resolution…

Don't get me wrong - specs are top of the line. But what was more amazing during today's presentation were new features and services. It is mixture of what Samsung forgot to copy from iPhone last time and new and original stuff. These I liked the most: Face recognition. On cameras, it meant that camera can recognize where faces are. On mobile, it recognizes whose face it is, like on social network. That gives some cool features. You can: open person from picture share picture with people who are on it group gallery by person S voice. It has Apple lawsuit written all over it. It is…
